Student Research Awards

The BRIC NS Student Research Award provides financial support for the completion of a research project that aligns with the priorities of Building Research for Integrated Primary Care in Nova Scotia (BRIC NS), Nova Scotia’s SPOR Network in the Canadian Primary Care Research Network. The aim of the award is to encourage future health researchers to consider primary care research as part of their career path.

Funding Details

The award is offered annually to a minimum of two eligible recipients. In addition to receiving this prestigious recognition, each recipient will receive a non-renewable financial award of $1,500 to support their research.  

Award recipients will be required to present their primary care research project at a BRIC NS event within 12 months of receiving the award.


2026 Cycle

Applications for the 2026 BRIC NS Student Research Award will be accepted from April 1st, 2026 (12:01am AT) until June 1st, 2026 (11:59pm AT).

To be considered for this award, applicants must:

  • Be a member of BRIC NS (free to join; more information at: https://bricns.com/join/)
  • Be a Master’s student, Doctoral student, or Medical Resident enrolled at a Nova Scotia post-secondary institution.
  • Be engaged in primary care research in at least one of BRIC NS’s priority areas (listed on the BRIC NS website: https://bricns.com/goals-and-priorities/).

Applications must include:

  1. Completed Application Form
  2. Research Project Description  
    • Up to a maximum of three pages (references not included in the page limit).  
    • Formatting requirements: Minimum 0.5” margins; 11pt Times New Roman or Calibri font.  
    • Descriptions must include the below categories: 
      • Background and objectives
      • Methodology/methods
      • Anticipated results and impact
      • Relevance to the goals and priorities of BRIC NS
      • Relationship of the project to primary care
      • Patient engagement plan
      • Knowledge translation plan
  3. Curriculum Vitae (CV)
    • Note that a Canadian Common CCV is not required, but would be acceptable.
  4. Academic Transcripts
    • A copy of academic transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended. Unofficial transcripts will be accepted. Official transcripts may be requested if the applicant is selected to receive the award.
  5. Letter of Reference
    • One letter of reference is required from the applicant’s supervisor or another individual who can attest to the applicant’s academic success (e.g., professor, instructor, research or project supervisor).  
    • Reference letters must be submitted directly by the referee, by email, to bricns@dal.ca
    • The letter should comment on the applicant’s research ability, communication skills, critical thinking, professionalism, and any other relevant attributes. 

Applications are assessed by the BRIC NS Student Research Award Review Committee using the following criteria:

  • Does the work address primary care research, practice, or policy? (Yes or No) 
  • Relevance and potential impact of the research project to the goals and priorities of BRIC NS (20%) 
  • Quality and feasibility of the proposed research project (20%) 
  • Relationship of the research project to primary care (15%) 
  • Quality and feasibility of the patient engagement plan (15%) 
  • Quality and feasibility of the knowledge translation plan (15%) 
  • Quality, relevance, and potential impact of the applicant’s academic abilities, training, and past experiences (15%)
