Presentation #1

Title: Exploring the impact of equity, diversity, and inclusivity factors on pediatric sleep and eHealth interventions

Presenter: Mya Dockrill

Mya Dockrill is a third-year PhD student in Clinical Psychology at Dalhousie University. She works under the supervision of Dr. Penny Corkum in the Department of Psychology and Neuroscience. Her research focuses on the development and evaluation of eHealth interventions to improve sleep for equity-deserving children. Outside of school, Mya enjoys spending time with family and friends and travelling!

Presentation #2

Title: Comparison of Three Frailty Measures in Older Adults: The pictorial fit frail scale as a potential standard frailty measure for routine care

Presenter: Chris Consmueller

Chris Consmueller has a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Kinesiology at Dalhousie University, where he is also conducting his Masters of Science in Kinesiology with Dr. Scott Grandy. Simultaneously, Chris is also working as a research assistant at the IWK Health Centre. In addition to research, Chris is heavily involved within the community with numerous long-term volunteer commitments. These experiences highlight Chris’s passion for enhancing health and bringing positive energy to the community. In his free time, Chris loves hanging out with his dogs Winston and Wally, baking with his girlfriend, and staying physically active.

The BRIC NS Primary Care Learning Series is an opportunity for professors, established researchers and/or early career investigators across Nova Scotia to share their completed or in-progress primary care research.

Title: Enhancing Continuing Care Case Management Services for Older Adults with Complex Needs

Presenter: Dr. O’Neil is a CIHR Health Systems Impact post-doctoral fellow conducting embedded research within Nova Scotia Health Continuing Care. Her work, which forms part of Continuing Care’s ongoing case management renewal initiative, focuses on better understanding the needs of older adults with complex health and social care issues. This unique research partnership also includes the Nova Scotia Centre on Aging (NSCA) at Mount Saint Vincent University.

Kelly holds a doctoral degree in educational studies from St. Francis Xavier University (2024) with a focus on older women’s learning. She also holds a master’s degree in gerontology and family studies from MSVU (2019) where her master’s research on housing insecurity among older women living with a low income in Halifax Regional Municipality garnered the university’s Graduate Thesis Award. She obtained a Bachelor of Social Work degree from Dalhousie University (2011) with an emphasis on critical, anti-oppressive practice. Kelly has been a research associate with NSCA since 2017 and has worked on projects focused on older workers, family/friend caregiving and dementia education. Kelly has worked as a professional gardener for almost 30 years, and enjoys making art and being in nature.

Title: Innovating Health Systems: A Showcase of Research from the Centre for Integrated Care

Presenter: Dr. Shelley Doucet is the Jarislowsky chair in Interprofessional Patient-Centred Care, professor in Nursing and Health Sciences, and director of the Centre for Research in Integrated Care at the University of New Brunswick. Shelley’s expertise lies in interprofessional patient-centred care, patient navigation, integrated care and qualitative research. She has a broad pan-Canadian research network through her role as the New Brunswick research lead for the Primary Care Research Network (PCRN).

Title: Change in physician-level workload using Electronic Medical Records in Canada (2011-2021)

Presenter: Dr. François Gallant is a Mitacs Postdoctoral Research Fellow with Dalhousie Family Medicine and Vitalité Health Network, where he works as a research coordinator. He is interested empirical methods and the creative use of observational data to contribute to the evidence base. Generally, François hopes to address research questions that will facilitate the empowerment of people to take charge of their health.

The BRIC NS Student Seminar Series is an opportunity for students across Nova Scotia to share their completed or in-progress research. Presentations cover a wide variety of disciplines, but all address the common thread of primary and integrated healthcare.

Title: Family Physicians with a Geriatric Focus: Describing their Medical Practice Patterns and Impacts

Presenter: Rebecca recently completed her PhD and began a Postdoctoral Fellowship at Dalhousie University in the Department of Family Medicine. She is a health services researcher with interests in primary care, aging, health human resources, and medical education. She trained at McMaster University (PhD, Health Research Methodology, 2024) and the University of Waterloo (BSc, Honours Health Studies, 2019). Her dissertation included a modified Delphi study and two population-based observational studies to investigate the impacts of added competency training and focused medical practice among family physicians on caring for older adults. During her postdoc, Rebecca will lead mixed-methods, multi-provincial studies to understand the impacts of population aging on primary care needs and capacity.

Presenters:

Rebecca Correia is a 3rd year PhD candidate in Health Research Methodology at McMaster University with anticipated graduation in 2024. Conducting research under the supervision of Dr. Andrew Costa​.

Alicia-Grant Singh is in her last year of MA Health Promotion program at Dalhousie, expected to graduate in May 2023. Conducting research under the supervision of Dr. Lois Jackson. She works in a casual position as a RN in the Emergency Department.
