Quality in Primary Healthcare Seminar Series

Understanding gestational weight gain through the lens of the PCCM Framework

Excess gestational weight gain is associated with a number of adverse outcomes for mothers and their offspring in the prenatal, intrapartum, and postpartum periods.  This seminar will explore gestational weight gain through the lens of the Patient-Centred Clinical Method Framework.

Approximately 60% of women gain excess weight in pregnancy, and interventions targeting this health problem have been mostly unsuccessful to date.  Dr. Helena Piccinini-Vallis (Dept. of Family Medicine, Dalhousie University) will explore gestational weight gain through the PCCM framework, which provides a patient- and clinician-centered view that could inform future research and interventions.  Recent qualitative, quantitative and mixed-methods research will be presented to illustrate this approach.
